Biographical Information[edit]
Clyde Williams was a minor league infielder and college coach. He played for the Sioux Falls Canaries in 1902 and 1903, the Marshalltown Grays in 1904 and 1905, the Marshalltown Brownies in 1906, the St. Paul Saints and Toledo Mud Hens in 1907, Toledo again in 1908, and the Des Moines Boosters in 1909 and 1910.
Williams attended the University of Iowa, where he competed in baseball, football, and track. He captained the Iowa baseball team in 1900 and was also a standout football player, becoming Iowa's first All-American in 1900.[1] He coached the University of Iowa baseball team in 1902 and 1903.[2]
After his playing career, Williams became a prominent figure at Iowa State University, working as a football and baseball coach, starting the school's basketball program, and serving as athletic director from 1914 to 1919.[3] He was inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Iowa State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.[1][3]
Williams was born in Shelby County, IA on March 24, 1879, and died in Sheldon, IA on March 20, 1938. He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, IA.
